Former First Lady Barbara Bush hospitalized in Texas

The wife and mother of two U.S. presidents has been hospitalized in Texas.

Barbara Bush, wife of 41st president George H.W. Bush and mother of 43rd president George W. Bush, is being treated for a respiratory issue at the Methodist Hospital in Houston’s Texas Medical Center, a statement from the Bush family said.

The 88-year-old former first lady was admitted to the hospital on Monday.

She is in great spirits, has already received visits from her husband and family, and is receiving fantastic care, the Bush family statement said.

The Bush family said it would issue further updates when warranted.

Bush served as First Lady of the United States between 1989 and 1993, when George H.W. Bush was in the White House. Her eldest son George W. Bush served consecutive terms as president, between 2001 and 2009.

Her 89-year-old husband — the oldest living former president — has also had his share of health problems.

In August, he was unable to take part in the 50th anniversary commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington because of health issues. In January he was in hospital for about two months because of a bronchitis-related cough.

George W. Bush was also in the hospital in August. The 67-year-old underwent surgery to treat an arterial blockage.
