The incident snarled traffic on the freeway, with the route closed to westbound traffic for hours at the Willingdon exit.

The highway has since reopened, but drivers were warned to expect major delays.

The BC Highway Patrol said investigators were deployed to search for the object, and that the driver of a white sedan was taken to hospital.

“We don’t think it was thrown from an overpass,” highway patrol spokesperson Cpl. Melissa Jongema told Global News.

“From what we understand this happened away from an overpass. We’re still looking into the possibility this may have come from a different vehicle.”

BC Emergency Health Services said it was notified of the incident at 11:23 a.m., and deployed multiple units including advanced care paramedics.

The RCMP Lower Mainland Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service was also deployed to the scene.

Witnesses or anyone who has dashcamera from Highway 1 around the time of the incident are asked to call police at 604-526-9744.
