Getting the most out of your phone battery and a “hot” cold weather tip!

With all the cold weather and travel delays, this would be a good time to review how to make your phone run longer, especially if you are away from a charger.

Here are some tips I showed and talked about in today’s Global TV Monday Morning News Tech Talk Show:

-Needless to say, make sure your cell is fully charged before you travel. Top it off whenever you can during travel.

-Having a spare battery for your phone is a good idea in places where you can’t charge it.

-Use portable battery packs that charge your phone via USB cord. Under $50 models store about from 900 mAh, good enough for three hours of talk to 3,000 mAh good for up to ten ours talk. They can either top off your phone battery or simply use your phone while they are plugged in. The powerdash r900 rapid charger $39.99 from Ventev.com or Amazon, charges your phone from the cigarette lighter and its own built-in 900 mAh battery you can use in an emergency.

– Use phone chargers that charge at twice the rate, 2 Amps instead if 1 Amp. Your phone will be serviceable much sooner.

-Conserve battery power on your phone. Turn off apps that are open in the background, done differently on each phone model. Some phone show your battery usage from all applications and functions.

-Radios, tiny transmitters and receivers on your phone, use a lot of energy, especially when in bad locations, like basements, classrooms and shopping centrers. The most important ones to have on your cellular network to be connected all the time, is voice and data. WiFi, if readily available is second best, if not, turn it off.

-If you are travelling afar in or out of country, put your phone in airplane mode…this guarantees the phone is not communicating with anything. Keep in mind to also turn off sophisticated sensors like accelerometers, gyroscopes and GPS.

-If you must use your partially charged phone, remember to also turn the screen brightness down and minimize the wake time so the phone sleeps sooner, typically 30 seconds, when not used.

-The ultimate sure fire way to save an almost depleted phone battery is to turn it off till you have to use it and keep it warm, in your pocket.

-Always take a USB cord with micro USB in one end, so you can charge your phone off a laptop.

-Cold weather phone usage tip. Did you know you can use your touch screen phone with latex gloves?  Although thin, they can keep your skin from freezing, trapping heat inside and letting you touch cold objects outside.
