Montreal police car involved in fatal crash

MONTREAL – An 82-year-old man was killed and several other people were injured Tuesday night when a vehicle struck a police car responding to an emergency call in Montreal’s Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district.

The police cruiser was passing through the intersection of Sherbrooke St. E. and Arcand St. about 9 p.m. when the crash occurred.

According to Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Richard Gagné, the officers were not proceeding through a red light but there was a stop sign at the intersection. It is still unclear what caused the accident, he added.

The two officers and the female passenger in the second car were taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries. All are expected to recover.

Because the accident and the death involved a Montreal police vehicle, the SQ has taken over the investigation.
