Victims of Oregon bus crash file multi-million dollar lawsuit

Nine people were killed and 38 people injured when a bus went off an icy interstate highway outside of Pendleton, Oregon and plunged down a hillside on Dec. 30, 2012.

The bus company, operated by the Coquitlam-based “Mi Joo Tour and Travel”, is now defunct, but some of the victims have filed a 700 million dollar lawsuit.

The lawsuit claims the bus driver was unfit to be driving because of too many hours behind the wheel.

The bus was travelling from Las Vegas to Vancouver when it crashed.

The State of Oregon is accused of negligence for not installing enough safety barriers along that the stretch of the I-84.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.

“We’re alleging that the driver of the vehicle was driving recklessly, almost up to 80 miles an hour, which is about 130 kilometres per hour in a speed zone that was much less” says lawyer Scott Parks. “And he was driving in very bad road conditions, but we’re also alleging that the state of Oregon was responsible as well.”

“Were reasonable cautions in place to keep such an event from happening once it already started? Once the bus started sliding and slipping, were reasonable conditions in place by the state of Oregon to prevent a bus from going off the cliff?”
