EDMONTON – The man they call Can Man Dan is back at it; Dan Johnstone is once again camping out in the cold in hopes of putting an end to hunger.
“We grew up in a single-mother, low-income family household so we used the Food Bank a lot. For 18 years of my life we used it, so it’s time for me to give back and this is the way I do it,” Johnstone said Sunday.

Every year, Johnstone does a 60-hour camp-out to raise money and food for Edmonton’s Food Bank. He already did a camp-out a couple of weeks ago, but didn’t meet his goal of raising 16,000 pounds of food and $9,000. So on Sunday, Johnstone started the second edition of his annual camp-out, at the Southbrook Sobeys located at 111 Street and Ellerslie Road.
“This is the City of Champions, this is Edmonton, I know everyone is going to pull together and I know we’re going to make goal.”
As of Sunday morning, Johnstone had collected 12,000 pounds of food and about $2,200.
If you’re unable to get to the Southbook location, Johnstone is also taking donations on his Facebook page.
Johnstone is also Delux Burger Bar’s celebrity chef this month. $1 from each of his burgers that are sold will go to the Food Bank.
