TORONTO – York University students were being bused back to a reopened Keele campus Tuesday after a fire in a utilities building Monday shut down the school’s boilers and generators, leaving the campus without heat.
Monday evening exams and Tuesday exams were postponed; so far, the Monday exams have all been rescheduled, but plans to reschedule Tuesday exams are still underway, according to York University spokesperson Alex Bilyk.
The approximate 4,000 students living in the eight residences on campus were forced to vacate their rooms Monday evening and were offered alternate accommodations.
Bilyk said students were encouraged to stay with friends and family if possible. For the rest, York booked hotel rooms across the city to accommodate 3,000 students, but only about 1,100 students checked in.
The cause of the fire is still unknown and is currently being investigated.
