Kelowna’s new outdoor ice rink under repair

There’s a setback at Kelowna’s Stewart Park as the ice making system at the ice rink failed to turn on last week.

“We went to start up the ice for Stewart Park last week and discovered there was not the pressure in the line that we expected to see,” says Andrew Gibbs, City of Kelowna Park and Public Space Projects Manager.

Gibbs calls the setback a serious inconvenience.

The ice rink on Kelowna’s waterfront passed testing last winter, but was never opened. The outdoor rink at Stewart Park is scheduled to open December 10th, but the coolant leak has to be found and fixed first.

“We did some pressure testing,” says Gibbs. “It sounds like from pressure testing that there’s a leak somewhere in the line. And that’s what we’re trying to investigate right now.”

When it comes to noticeable leak, Gibbs says they have yet to find any glycol seepage from the closed system, which he says is good news.

Cimco crews began jack hammering concrete spots to attempt to find the leak Monday.

“What we’re doing is identifying the highest probability sites for the leak,” says Gibbs. “We’re working our way through those to find out where it is.”

But Kelowna taxpayers will not be on the hook for repairs, according to Gibbs, as the work is being done under warranty.
