Large amount of cocaine seized from marine container in Vancouver

CBSA officials found 130 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside a shipping container from Russia. Handout

Officials in Vancouver have seized around 130 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside a marine container from Russia, according to the Canada Border Services Agency.

The CBSA said the cocaine was found inside a 40-foot refrigerated marine container in September.

According to the shipping documents, the container held 25,000 kilograms of food products, however a high-energy X-ray machine revealed irregularities in the contents.

A full examination later revealed 109 bricks of cocaine hidden in the ceiling of the container.

“Despite the elaborate method used to attempt to conceal these narcotics, they were intercepted by our border services officers – skilled professionals who specialize in detecting and seizing prohibited goods at the border,” said Roslyn MacVicar, CBSA’s director general for the Pacific Region.

Officials said the investigation into the attempt to smuggle drugs into Canada is ongoing.
