Charest faces confidence vote nail-biter in Quebec legislature

QUEBEC – Quebec Premier Jean Charest is expected to win a confidence vote today to keep the opposition from toppling his Liberal government.

But it’s going to be close.

The vote on a non-confidence motion is expected to be so tight that Charest delayed a foreign trip to avoid the possibility of losing his government.

One of two cabinet ministers scheduled to join him on the trip has also stayed behind for this afternoon’s vote.

Charest’s Liberals hold a slim majority in the Quebec legislature.

The government has, however, been on the defensive in recent months over allegations of rampant corruption in the province.

More to come.
