Company contracted to repair flood-damaged bridges

CALGARY- An engineering firm has been named, to rebuild three pedestrian bridges in southwest Calgary that were washed away during the June flood.

$9 million has been allocated to build the suspension bridges crossing the Elbow River at Sandy Beach, Sifton Blvd. and along Elbow Drive into the community of Rideau.

The city has hired Declan Corporation to come up with winning designs—a company currently working on the Heritage Station pedestrian bridge.

“I think Delcan’s strengths are mostly in the fact that we deal with architects a lot, so we are willing to put high architectural content into structures when necessary to make them a little better bit better than the ordinary,” says Hugh Hawk, VP of Declan Corporation. “We have designed bridges that have won many awards.”

Those who live in the area can’t wait for the structures to be built.

“These are some of my favourite [running] routes, so I miss them terribly,” says Peter Graham, who uses the Sifton Blvd. route. “Everyone I talk to in the neighborhood really misses them.”

The city is working to fast track construction.

“We are working aggressively to get the design completed, because we do want to begin construction in the spring,” explains project manager Charmaine Buhler. “Each bridge will still be unique, so there will be design elements that will be specific to those sites.”

Over 1,400 people responded to a survey about what the bridges should look like. The designs will be unveiled later this winter, with construction set to start in the spring.
