Wife sentenced to four years for husband’s shooting death

CALGARY – A 63-year-old woman convicted of shooting her husband to death in their Sundre home has been sentenced to four years behind bars.

A jury found Heather Wilson-Duncan guilty of manslaughter in the death of her husband, who was killed in December of 2010.

She was originally on trial for second-degree murder.

Heather testified she and Barry Alexander Duncan had been drinking heavily on the night of his death, and got into an argument over Christmas decorations.

She said he went into their bedroom and returned with a shotgun, urging her to shoot him.

In court, 911 tapes were played in which Wilson-Duncan told the dispatcher she thought he was joking and didn’t know the gun was loaded.

On Monday, Wilson-Duncan was sentenced to four years in prison, the mandatory minimum for manslaughter with a firearm.

Her lawyer is considering an appeal of the conviction, but has decided against challenging her sentence.
