SASKATOON – A Saskatoon group is striving to be a game changer for families in Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world.

Elaine Zakreski travelled to Malawi six years ago. What she saw impacted her deeply.

“I was upset by all the suffering and orphans that I had witnessed, and feeling completely inadequate to do anything about it. I kept thinking, what can one person do?” she explained.

Zakreski then met up with Jean Kalinga, who shared her dream of helping Malawians.

After some hard work, the women helped to open a medical clinic and a preschool safe house there.

“It’s a 13-room clinic, fully modern, with toilets, which [the community] had not even heard of. It’s got solar power, and a light at night,” said Peter Zakreski, Hope for Malawi founder.

“These were just revelations to them, that these kinds of things exist.”

The Zakreskis founded Hope for Malawi, an organization that builds schools and provides educational supplies.

“Hundreds, probably thousands of kids have given us school supplies. We filled up two 40 foot containers,” explained Ms. Zakreski.

A Hope for Malawi book and CD were also created to help raise funds.

The foundation already built its first school and hopes to begin construction on a second soon.
