Drug, assault charges laid following deadly crash

CALGARY- The driver charged in a deadly crash on an Alberta highway is now also facing drug charges.

On November 22, emergency crews were called to Highway 11 near Rocky Mountain House for reports of a crash.

They found an SUV had rolled into the ditch, and there were several intoxicated people inside including a female in critical condition. A damaged pickup truck was found a short distance away, and after speaking with the driver RCMP realized that he had hit the woman found in the SUV, as well as gotten in an altercation with the other passengers.

The victim, a 14-year-old from Eden Valley, died at the scene.

RCMP executed a search warrant on the truck and found 171 pounds of marijuana concealed in the box of the truck. It’s believed the drugs were being driven to B.C. The estimated value of the marijuana is approximately $600,000, and the 51-year-old driver is now facing charges of drug possession.

Three people who were in the SUV are also facing impaired driving and assault charges.
