For 15-year-old twins Brandi and Glenn, a simple trip to the mall to meet their friends can be a big challenge.

Both suffer from cerebral palsy and need a specialized van to get around.

Their mom Virginia Burant says the family van was modified to be able to transport wheelchairs many years ago and now the tie-down straps are broken.

The straps help to keep the wheelchairs secure and in place in case of an accident or sudden stop.

The family has been using temporary straps that they made themselves, but these are not safe and not approved for motor vehicle use.

“The old ones are very thin and falling apart,” says Burant. “And we’ve had them for quite a while, so we need new ones.”

Now, the CKNW Orphans’ Fund is helping the family replace the wheelchair tie-downs.

Burant says she found out just a couple of days ago that the funds have been accepted.

She says it is a huge relief for the family, because the special tie-downs can get quite expensive.

“I am very thankful for everything they have done,” says Burant.

The CKNW Orphans’ Fund is dedicated “to promoting the health and welfare of physically, mentally and socially challenged, as well as those children in B.C. who have been orphaned from society.”

The organization gives the money directly to the third party, and not to the family.

The CKNW Orphans’ Fund is holding their annual pledge day today. Donations can be made here.
