Albertan receives jail sentence and fine for shooting grizzly and cub

An Edmonton man has been sentenced to five months in jail and ordered to pay $10,000 in fines for shooting a sow grizzly and her cub.

52-year-old Frank Kucher was convicted of five counts under the Wildlife Act, including two counts of hunting wildlife out of season, two counts of abandoning the carcasses, and one count of unlawful possession of wildlife.

He is prohibited from hunting for nine years.

In October 2010, Fish and Wildlife officers received an anonymous tip from someone who said they saw the head of a grizzly bear in Kucher’s garage. Officers went to Kucher’s home and seized the head and claws of a sow grizzly.

The next day, officer found the carcasses of the sow and her cub along the Pembina River and Kucher was charged.

Grizzly bears are considered a threatened species and it’s illegal to hunt them in Alberta.
