A cyclist was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition after he was hit by a minivan in southeast Calgary on Wednesday morning.
EMS officials confirm the collision occurred around 7 a.m. along southbound Macleod Trail at a spot near the Shawnessy Boulevard overpass.
According to police, witness reports indicated the cyclist, an adult male, had been carrying a broom and waving it at passing vehicles while pedaling northbound in the southbound lane.
A minivan, driven by a man in his 80s, was travelling southbound in the same lane as the bike and struck the cyclist.
The collision toppled the cyclist off the bike and sent the bicycle into the path of a sedan. The car hit the bicycle and it became wedged under the car.
The cyclist, whose age was not released, was taken by ambulance with serious injuries to the Foothills Medical Centre.
Neither driver was injured and both remained on scene.
The southbound lanes of Macleod Trail were closed to traffic for several hours during the investigation and were reopened at noon.
