More plans for the orphanage that banana bread built

It’s nearly been three years since we first reported on an Abbotsford woman, who single-handedly baked and sold banana bread to help fund the construction of a small orphanage in Uganda.

Since then, a lot has changed for Barbara Giraud. Due to the help of generous Global BC viewers buying thousands of loaves of Giraud’s bread, donating tens of thousands of dollars and even helping her bake to keep up with the demand, a small portion of the Jaaja Barb’s Home of Angels in Jinja, Uganda has opened. To date, 11 orphans have moved into the orphanage.

The giving didn’t end with banana bread, recently the non-profit  Fraser Valley Gleaners donated 500,000 meals comprised of dehydrated vegetables that can be turned into nutritious soups or stews. The donated meals were appreciated but also presented a problem for Giraud – how would she get them to Uganda.

Two Vancouver donors stepped up with one donating a 40-foot long container and the other offering to pay the freighter shipping cost to Kenya, where it will be trucked to the village of Jinja.

The overall goal for the Home of Angels  is to eventually accommodate 50 children. But before the orphanage can grow, they have to finish an additional living quarters; which costs $20,000.

Along with additional living space, they have plans for a sustainability program. The sustainability plan includes a bakery and raising chickens to lay eggs; which would be sold to the village. In order to build the bakery, they need to raise an additional $6,000.

Finally, while the 11 orphans that have already moved in have sponsors, the children yet to move into the orphanage do not.
