REGINA – Regina Transit and SGI are teaming up this holiday season for the 26th annual Ding in the New Year, offering free public transit on New Year’s Eve from 7 p.m. to 2:15 a.m.

“Ding in the New Year is here to offer residents a safe ride home on New Year’s Eve and a safe start to 2014,” said Mayor Michael Fougere. “New Year’s Eve is a time of hope, of new starts and of evaluating who we are and who we want to be. If you drink, resolve not to drive. Please always plan a safe ride home.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“Every year SGI is proud to continue our support for Ding in the New Year,” said Minister responsible for SGI Donna Harpauer. “Alcohol is among the top contributing factors in fatal collisions in Saskatchewan. We want to make sure everyone gets home safely on New Year’s Eve and this is one way we can help them plan a safe ride home.”

“There really is no excuse for drinking and driving,” said Regina Police Chief Troy Hagen. “It’s such an unnecessary risk with severe consequence to yourself and others. With Ding in the New Year’s free transit service, there’s yet another option when planning a safe ride home on New Year’s Eve.”

Transit riders are able to call the Ride Line at 306-777-RIDE until 2:15 a.m. on New Year’s Day for transit schedules.

Regina police are also reminding people to have a happy (and responsible) New Year.
