A Calgary child is in serious condition after he was struck by a vehicle while sledding in the city’s northeast on Tuesday.

According to a Calgary Police Service release on Wednesday afternoon, police were called to the area of Marlyn Place and the 200 block of Marlyn Way Northeast in Marlborough at around 5:30 p.m. for reports that a child collided with a vehicle.

Police said an SUV being driven by a 25-year-old man was traveling west on Marlyn Place. As he approached the intersection, a six-year-old boy was sledding down a hill onto Marlyn Way Northeast.

Police added the child slid into the passenger side of the vehicle as it was driving and was knocked off the sled and into the roadway.

According to the release, the child was sent to hospital in serious condition. Previously, a CPS spokesperson told Global News the child was in life-threatening condition.

The CPS said the vehicle stayed on scene and officers are speaking to witnesses while the traffic unit has taken over the investigation.

Speed and alcohol are not considered factors in the investigation, police said.
