Winnipeg mayor Sam Katz tried to sell residents on the benefits of the recently proposed property tax increase, by detailing some of the road projects the money will pay for.

Katz said Monday that a 900 metre stretch of Henderson Highway will get a major face lift in 2014, from McLeod Avenue to Springfield Road.

It’s part of Katz’s “Regional Street Renewal Reserve” proposed in the 2014 budget last week. It’s funded by one point of the 2.95% property tax increase planned for next year. It still needs to be approved by council.

“This plan to renew our regional streets will bring a noticeable improvement to major thoroughfares like Henderson Highway,” Katz is quoted in a news release. “Winnipeggers have told us repeatedly that they want us to fix city streets. The Regional Street Renewal Reserve means we will be able to rehabilitate an additional 48 lane kilometres in need of repair in 2014, enhancing our transportation infrastructure network significantly.”

The city says its Preliminary Capital Budget calls for $3.1 million to be invested in major rehabilitation work along Henderson Highway and another $8.3 million in rehabilitation work along Portage Avenue.

If approved, the Regional Street Renewal Reserve would see $35.3 million spent on regional streets, an increase of $18.8 million over 2013 spending.
