We hope you will join us to celebrate the opening of Ian Rawlinson’s solo exhibition, HOPELESS ROMANTIC. The artist will be in attendance. PLEASE WEAR A MASK. Ian Rawlinson is a Saskatoon painter known for his psychologically-charged nocturnal paintings. His work is deeply personal and often difficult to categorize; his paintings are landscapes, though his approach to the genre has always been unconventional. His scenes of the urban and rural environment are almost exclusively captured at dusk, that in-between time of day when waning light casts all forms into an ambiguous shadow zone. Rawlinson often uses photographic images as starting points, though they are quickly abandoned in favour of a responsive approach guided by feeling and intuitiion. The finished paintings are distilled through memory and emotion rather than direct observation. There is an enigmatic, supernatural quality to the works, in which ordinary locations are imbued with an ominous mood and eerie unease through dramatic plays of light and shadow. Forms become obscured, at times even abstracted, as the familiar is made strange.
