Come celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Militant Mothers of Raymur. In 1971, this small group of moms living in Raymur Place public housing in East Vancouver took on the City, the housing authority, the port, the courts, and the railways to make their children safer – and THEY WON! Their children had to cross busy train tracks to get to and from Seymour Elementary. After a protracted campaign that included occupying the tracks and blockading trains, the City built a pedestrian overpass that is still in use today. On Saturday, May 7, the Mothers and their families, friends and supporters will celebrate that historic victory at a free outdoor event near the tracks with a City proclamation, a plaque from the Vancouver Heritage Foundation and lots of ceremony, live music, kids’ art, storytelling and, of course, cake!
