Trio Seoul is one of the Vancouver Chamber Music Society’s most looked forward to programs in the 2023/24 Delta Series. Kyu Yeon Kim, Jinjoo Cho, and Brannon Cho founded Trio Seoul in 2022 on a mission to combine forces between three consummate 21st-century musicians. Together, they are winners and laureates of more than 20 international competitions. The city of Seoul is a dynamic symbol of the ensemble’s cultural roots and artistic intensity, which they pay homage to in February’s program. Anton Arensky’s Piano Trio No. 1 in D Major employs Korean folk tunes in a time when Japan invaded Korea. Trio Seoul commissioned Korean composer Uzong Choe’s Scattered Dreams as a companion piece to Arensky’s trio. The result is a hauntingly beautiful minimalist installation of the folk tunes into a post-modern idiom.
