The Manitoba government says Parks Canada is considering closing a popular lake to boating this year because of zebra mussels.

The Quagga and Zebra mussels were first introduced in the Great Lakes in 1988 and made their way west about 10 years ago.

The province announced that BC Hydro will be investing into the program for the next five years, at $900,000 a year.

The fight to keep invasive mussels from damaging B.C. lakes and waterways got some financial support this week, but it falls short of what's needed, officials say.

Staff will be monitoring the parks and anyone found breaking the rules could face a fine of up to $25,000.

"I think this is a wake-up call," experimental lakes researcher Scott Higgins said. "Clear Lake is now the most western lake in Canada to be invaded with zebra mussel."

In September, the Idaho Dept. of Agriculture announced that quagga mussels had been found in the mid-Snake River, which is around 11 hours south of B.C.'s border.

While there had previously been the presence of environmental mussel DNA near the boat launch, live mussels hadn't turned up until now.
