Calgarian among select few attending JFK ceremony in Dallas

CALGARY – A Calgary man is one of just 5,000 people selected to attend a solemn ceremony in Dallas marking the 50th anniversary of U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s assassination.

He was shot on November 22, 1963 while riding in a motorcade through the Texas city.

Calgarian Sean Maclean was born 15 years after JFK’s death but says he has always been a fan.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

He was one of the few who received a ticket to Friday’s ceremony, after applying through an online site.

“They screen you, it goes through the FBI and Dallas Police, it’s really heavily screened,” says Maclean. “In early October it came back to say you’ve been invited to come on down.”

The event will feature remarks from the mayor of Dallas, the tolling of church bells and readings from the president’s speeches by author David McCullough.

“Honestly it means the world to me, it’s an amazing event to get down there and meet all these people with the same interest as me,” adds Maclean.
