TORONTO — Lady Gaga walked briskly into a downtown Toronto event venue Monday night without stopping for photographers or reporters.
She waved, smiled and said only “I miss you!” when asked if she had a message for her Toronto “monsters.”
Gaga arrived at 99 Sudbury more than an hour after a scheduled photo call — which her people cancelled at the last minute, purportedly due to poor lighting.
Once inside, the pop superstar met with contest winners and VIPs and took part in a Q&A session. Media was not permitted inside.
Gaga’s appearance came after a day of media interviews at the Hazelton Hotel to promote her new album ARTPOP. The singer flew into the city after hosting and performing on Saturday Night Live in New York City.
What a difference five years makes.
It was in November 2008 when Gaga was first in Toronto to promote her debut album, The Fame. At the time she had only one hit single to her name (“Just Dance”).
The singer made an appearance at Eva’s Phoenix, a facility for homeless youth. Gaga toured the building, spoke to residents and then signed autographs.
On that same visit to Toronto, Gaga showcased a few of her songs for hundreds of people at the now-defunct CiRCA nightclub. Before going on stage, she playfully painted a message for the crowd on a window overlooking the dance floor.
Gaga was back in Toronto seven months later to perform at the MuchMusic Video Awards (MMVAs), where she donned a fire-spewing bra.
By November 2009 she was able to fill the Air Canada Centre, where she brought her Monster Ball tour.
In 2011, Gaga returned to the MMVAs — this time to promote her album Born This Way.
Gaga was last in Toronto in February 2013 for a stop on her Born This Way tour at the Air Canada Centre.
