Bombers fire head coach Tim Burke

WINNIPEG — Less than a day after being confirmed as the CEO and president of the Blue Bombers, Wade Miller made his first major move Wednesday, announcing Tim Burke will not be returning as head coach for the 2014 season.

“We thank Tim for his passion, hard work and professionalism throughout the past year and a half he has been in this role, and for his tireless efforts over the past three seasons,” Miller said in a news release.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“If an opportunity does arise for him to join our staff as a defensive co-ordinator, our organization would definitely be open to exploring this with Tim,” Miller added.

If the new head coach is comfortable with having the former head coach on his staff, then it’s safe to surmise Burke would be welcomed back.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time in Winnipeg,” Burke is quoted as saying in the same news release, “and am grateful for the opportunity this franchise gave me. The fan support in this city and province is just really remarkable and it is one of the greatest things I can take away from this experience in Winnipeg.”

Burke join the Blue Bomber coaching staff before the 2011 season in the role of defensive co-ordinator, before taking over on an interim basis as head coach in August 2012 when then general manager Joe Mack fired Paul LaPolice. Burke was officially named head coach in November last year. His record in 28 games as head coach of the Blue Bombers was 7-21.
