NAHEED NENSHI COASTS TO VICTORY

Calgarians elected Naheed Nenshi for a second term as mayor in a civic election that saw the defeat of two incumbent councillors.

Riding a purple tidal wave, Nenshi trounced his closest opponent, former alderman and MLA Jon Lord, by a margin of more than three to one. He defeated Lord by over 136,000 votes.

Nenshi told the crowd of supporters at his election night headquarters that Calgarians have given the new city council a clear mandate.

“They’ve spoken loud and clear about the kind of community they want. A community of great, livable, walkable neighbourhoods everywhere … not a community of never-ending sprawl.”

Sutherland, who is 52, is a former president of the Royal Oak Rocky Ridge Community Association.

Harper, a management consultant and the former president of the Federation of Calgary Communities, says he will ask for a recount.

Harper was also a runner-up in Ward 1 in the 2010 civic election.

In Ward 2, Joe Magliocca won the race with a third of the votes. The ward, in the city’s far northwest, was left wide open when longtime councillor Gord Lowe decided not to run again.

Magliocca, a business owner, finished a close second to Lowe in the 2010 civic election.

The public school board election saw the defeat of longtime trustee George Lane in Wards 6 & 7.
