UPDATE: Man charged in 2012 double fatal crash sentenced

A Richmond man who has been charged with two counts of impaired driving in the deaths of two brothers in 2012 has been sentenced to two years behind bars.

On May 12, a 2006 BMW crashed into a tree near Steveston and 4 Road in Richmond, killing two passengers inside.

The driver — Ryan Jeffrey Webster — has been charged with two counts of operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol level over 80 mgs causing death.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The two victims were just 16 and 19 years old at the time of the crash. Webster was 20.

Today, Crown asked for two to three years in jail for Webster, but defense insisted on two years less a day, which is on what the judge eventually agreed upon.

Webster will serve his sentence in a provincial prison. Defense says it is an important factor because Webster is only 22-year-old, and they say he does not belong in a federal institution.

They say the accident was his first offence for which he is very sorry.

Webster did not flee the scene, was the one to call 9-1-1 and has been undergoing counselling for the last year and a half.

He was sentenced to three years probation and a five-year driving prohibition.
