Friend gives rare, precious gift of surrogacy

SASKATOON – For Chantal Kahovec, being a mom is like breathing. Ever since she can remember, she wanted a child.

Thanks to the kindness of her best friend, her dream has now come true.

“When I was 21, I was diagnosed with cervical cancer and had a radical hysterectomy at that time, so I’ve known since then, I can’t have children,” said Kahovec.

Chantal and her husband John Kahovec tried surrogacy several times, but it didn’t work.

Their cousin offered to carry their baby but the newborn, Preston, was diagnosed with diaphragmatic hernia and passed away at two-weeks-old.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

After all the sadness and devastation, Chantal and John were offered a beacon of hope.

Their close friend Kristin Crossman stepped forward and became their surrogate.

“Everything was kinda surreal to me until she was born, basically I couldn’t believe it until it happened,” said Mr. Kahovec.

Crossman already has two children of her own, but she said it was an easy decision.

“When you see what Chantal and John have been through to try to have a baby, I think it made it that much easier, because you think, that’s all they’ve ever wanted,” said Crossman.

Baby Mateah was born five months ago, weighing in at a healthy eight pounds, eleven ounces.

“It’s amazing that Kristin and [her husband] Teneal would do that for Chantal and John. They’ve been friends since grade school, but for them to actually take that time out of their lives and disrupt their lives like that, amazing,” said Mateah’s grandmother, Sandra Halliday.

Now Mateah will grow up knowing she was born from a loving, generous friendship.
