STARS celebrates anniversary in Saskatoon

SASKATOON – A few months after the Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society (STARS) in Regina celebrated its one year anniversary, Saskatoon hit its milestone on Tuesday.

Since its integration, STARS has executed around 270 missions out of Saskatoon.

“A year ago we launched at 12 noon and about 40 minutes later we had our first mission,” said Ron Dufresne, STARS Saskatchewan Operations VP.

The latest health and medical news emailed to you every Sunday.

“So that tells me our integration strategy and our operations plan for launch was very successful because within the first hour we received our first request for our mission.”

STARS expanded to 24/7 emergency service in February and thanks to PotashCorp, by the end of this year, its new hanger will have been completed.

Also, a new AW139 helicopter is expected to be operational in the spring of 2014.

“It’s all to serve our patents better and the new helicopter will get to our patients faster, be able to fly in worse weather conditions and just everything we do here is geared towards the patients,” said Jason Trask, STARS flight paramedic.

Another thing STARS is looking forward to is a helipad which is expected to be built on top of the future Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan.
