As family and friends celebrate the discovery of a missing mushroom picker in northwestern B.C., the search for another man in the southeastern corner of the province is believed to have come to a sad end.
Burnaby, B.C., resident Kyung Chun was reported missing on Sept. 19, several days after leaving his companion in an area near Nakusp, about 150 kilometres north of Nelson, to drive a load of mushrooms to the Lower Mainland.
During an initial search in September, Chun’s van was found stuck in mud on a forest service road in the Fosthall area of the Kootenay, about 25 kilometres south of Nakusp, and an RCMP dog handler uncovered human remains in the same area on Sunday.
Investigators believe the body is that of the 71-year-old man, but the coroner has not positively confirmed the identity.
Meanwhile, search teams have returned to a rugged region near Cedarvale, northeast of Terrace, B.C., after missing 26-year-old mushroom picker Ike Murray was found alive Monday afternoon, 15 days after he vanished.
Murray’s companion, 32-year-old Michael Sabo, is still missing, and rescuers have widened the search eastward and hope Murray can give them more precise information about why he left Sabo and where the two men separated during the ordeal that began when they were reported overdue Sept. 22 east of Terrace.
