Arson unit investigating string of suspicious fires

WINNIPEG — Police say several early-morning fires in the St. Boniface area were likely arsons.

Beginning at around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, several vehicles, garages and garbage bins caught fire on several streets, including Des Meurons Street, Desautels Street, De La Morenie Street and Provencher Boulevard. Police couldn’t say exactly how many fires there were.

“Based on the number of fires, based on where they have taken place, with close proximity to one another, it is suspicious in nature,” said Const. Jason Michalyshen of the Winnipeg Police Service. “We do believe they were deliberately set.”

Roger Daignault said he’s lived in the area for 15 years and this is the third time his car has been set on fire.

“It’s almost getting to a point where I ask, do I really want to live in Winnipeg?” Daignault said Sunday. “It’s now becoming an epidemic, where it’s not just one area where it’s bad, all areas are now being affected.”

So far no arrests have been made.
