REXTON, N.B. – Police have confirmed two arrests were made Sunday night where protesters are still blocking access to shale gas exploration equipment near Rexton, N.B.
Two men were arrested after trying to drive through a police barricade. One man is still in custody.
The protesters are trying to stop shale gas exploration in Kent County N.B., and remain in place despite a heavy police presence.
SWN Resources has been using seismic testing trucks — called “thumper” trucks — to explore Kent County. The shale gas mining company has permission to explore the area. The company says its work is environmentally friendly.
However, the protesters are worried about pollution if shale gas mining begins.
Lorraine Clair said this protest will be different than the ones that preceded it.
“This is it. This is the last stand,” she said. “We’re back here and we’re still taking a stand.”
So far the RCMP says no arrests have been made.
Protesters say their gate-block will continue until SWN promises to leave the province.
“I’m going to be here all night. I have school tomorrow morning, but I’m going to be here all night,” said Raven Chanelle.
“I’m here with my baby and I want them to see him he’s our future,” said Amanda Polchies.
Protestors have been trying to stop exploration since it started this summer.
Despite the trucks also being blocked repeatedl along Route 126 in June, the work continued.
“This is the only way we can send a message to the government, because they keep ignoring us,” said Al Mclaughlin.
The protesters vow this is the beginning of the end of SWN’s work in New Brunswick.
