B.C. hikers caught a rare encounter with a baby cougar on camera. Francois Carpentier

Two B.C. hikers were lucky enough to capture a close encounter with an adorable baby cougar on camera during a recent camping trip in Powell River.

Francois Carpentier and Jason Vranjkovic were hiking with friends earlier this week near Emma Lake when they spotted a cougar and her approximately eight-month-old cub, according to blogger and photographer Duane Burnett’s website.

Carpentier said the cougar ran away from the cub, leaving the cub behind.

“Then the cub came closer and closer to us, to finally stop roughly four feet from us. Cute and cuddly. About the size of an adult house cat. But much more muscular, with bigger eyes and ears,” Carpentier wrote in a blog post.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The hikers were able to snap several photos of the cub before leaving the area to let it reunite with its mother.
