TORONTO – It has been 10 years and $400 million dollars in the making but the wait is finally over as Sick Kids’ Hospital officially opens its highly anticipated research and learning tower on Tuesday.

The latest health and medical news emailed to you every Sunday.

“Part of the issue that we’ve had over the years is that we’ve been distributed over large part of downtown,” said Dr. Mike Salter in an interview on The Morning Show. “With coming together like this, the idea is that this will provide a force for accelerating the pace for discoveries and it’ll change the way we do research.”

The 21-storey Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning located in downtown Toronto will house 2,000-plus scientists under one roof after decades of being scattered in five different locations.

Those in the tower will conduct state-of-the-art research from disciplines such as genetics, genome biology, neurosciences and children’s mental health.

“We will be leading the world in many different areas from genetics, to brain sciences, to population health for children,” said Dr. Salter.
