Waskesiu’s iconic Lobstick Tree retired, replanted

WASKESIU, Sask. – Friends of Waskesiu Golf Course bid adieu to an iconic symbol and welcomed a new one on the Labour Day weekend.

The time came to renew a leafy symbol of tradition in Waskesiu, Sask. that sat in the middle of the fairway just over 100 yards from the first tee.

The Lobstick Tree has been shot at by perhaps hundreds of thousands of golfers including celebrities like Gordie Howe and Bob Hope.

Even the course’s world famous match-play event is named in the tree’s honour.

The annual Lobstick Invitational at Waskesiu is the largest match-play event in North America, attracting more than 700 golfers from across the continent for over 70 years every June.

Residents were invited to embrace the past as the tree reached the end of its lifespan and embarked upon the future by witnessing the birth of a new Lobstick Tree on Sunday.

Parks Canada provided a BBQ as the ceremonial felling and replanting took place with proud residents in attendance.

The Cree word ‘lobstick’ refers to an evergreen tree that’s had its branches cut off to the mid-way point to act as a navigational marker.
