CALGARY- All eyes are on the pros at the Shaw Charity Classic, but the real winners from this weekend’s tournament are the five charities benefiting from it.
Over a million dollars will go towards the children’s charities, including The Kids Cancer Care Foundation. They foundation runs Camp Kindle, which gives children with cancer a chance to just be kids.
“We’re able to provide free camp for over 500 kids and their siblings, who have cancer, each summer,” explains Jillian Edmonds.
The foundation also funds clinical support programs, oncology research and scholarships.
KidSport will also be receiving money, to help give underprivileged children the chance to play sports like hockey.
“There are all sorts of human skills and personal skills that kids develop as a result of being involved in any sport, whether it’s a team or individual sport,” says Mark Kosak from KidSport. “Skills that are going to make a person successful later in life.”
Last year, 8,000 children in the Calgary area were helped by the organization, and demand continues to grow.
The Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre, the YouthLink Calgary Police Interpretive Centre and the United Way will also benefit from the golf tournament.
