EDMONTON – Branden Chailler, an 18-year-old Edmonton man who admitted to killing and mutilating his mother’s dog, was sentenced to 26 months in prison on Monday.

Chailler pleaded guilty to mischief, break and enter, and unlawfully killing a dog earlier in August.

The court heard how in December of 2012, he killed his mother’s dog by slitting its throat in the west end mobile home they lived in.

He then sent pictures of the incident to a girl he was trying to impress.

Court heard Chailler left the mobile home, and broke into a business, an elementary school, vandalized a number of vehicles, and walked into traffic before he was arrested.

The Crown referred to the case as precedent-setting; asking for a 27-36 month sentence.  The Defense asked for a 12-month sentence.

Monday afternoon, Chailler was sentenced to 26-months less time served. Therefore, he has just over 16-months left to serve in prison.

A lifetime ban on owning a pet and a ten year ban on owning a firearm were also imposed on Chailler.

The Crown says it hopes that while he’s in prison, Chailler will access some of the programs that are available to help with mental health issues.
