Comparing Canadian zoos: how do Winnipeg’s admission rates stack up?

To get into Winnipeg’s Assiniboine Park Zoo, adults will have to fork over $18.50 plus GST come July 3, an increase of $10 since last summer.

Assiniboine Park Zoo

Located in Winnipeg, the zoo is 32 hectares (80 acres) and hosts 1,193 animals from 271 species. Winnipeg has a population of 663,617 according to the 2011 census. Prices do not include GST.

Adults (18-59): Current: $10.24; July 2014: $18.50; August 2013: $8.10

Located in Saint John, N.B., which has an area population of 68,000 as of 2006. The zoo has more than 100 animals from 38 species. The facility spans 14 hectares (35 acres).

Magnetic Hill Zoo

Located in Moncton, N.B., which has a population of 69,000. The zoo is home to 400 animals from 90 species. The facility spans 16 hectares (40 acres). Taxes are included in the prices.

Adult: $13.99 (June 21-Sept. 1), $10.99 (May 17-June 20 and Sept. 2-Oct. 26), $7.99 (April 12-May 16)

Toronto Zoo

The Toronto Zoo is in Toronto, which boasts a population of 2.615 million. The zoo has more than 5,000 animals from 500 species. The facility spans 287 hectares (710 acres). Prices include taxes.

Bowmanville Zoo

Bowmanville Zoo is located in Bowmanville, Ont., which is about 60 kilometres east of Toronto. Bowmanville has a population of 10,000 people. The zoo is 22 hectares (55 acres) and is home to hundreds of animals. Prices include taxes.

Calgary Zoo, Botanical Garden and Prehistoric Park

Located in Calgary, the Calgary Zoo, Botanical Garden and Prehistoric Park boasts 1,100 animals spanning 289 species. The zoo is 48 hectares (120 acres) and was badly damaged during the 2013 flood. Calgary is home to around 1.097 million people.

Edmonton Valley Zoo

The Edmonton Valley Zoo is in Edmonton, which is home to 817,498 people. The zoo is home to 350 animals and is 48 hectares (120 acres) large. These are the 2013 summer admission rates; rates are lower in winter.

Greater Vancouver Zoo
