West Nile virus found in Saskatoon mosquitoes

Hastings Prince Edward Public Health says the summer's first case was detected in Sidney Township. File / Global News

SASKATOON – The City of Saskatoon says mosquitoes caught in a single trap were carrying the West Nile virus.

Testing by the Ministry of Health confirmed the finding.

City officials say with the finding, there is a greater risk of infection, especially at dusk and dawn when mosquito activity is at its greatest.

While Culex tarsalis numbers have been low this year, the city and the Saskatoon Health Region say there are a number of preventative measures to further reduce the risk of being bitten.

  • Limit outdoor activities between dusk and dawn, when the mosquitoes are most likely to bite.
  • Wear light coloured long pants and long sleeve shirts, especially at dusk and dawn.
  • Use mosquito nets over play pens and carriages.
  • Keep screened windows and doors in good repair. Check them regularly for holes or gaps.
  • Keep grass cut short.
  • Eliminate all standing water on your property where mosquitoes can lay their eggs (e.g. flower pots, bird baths, etc.)
  • Use insect repellant that contains DEET (note, DEET products should NOT be used on infants under six months)

This is the first time this year tests were positive in the city.
