NEW YORK – Research firm IDC says Apple’s iPhone continued to lose market share to Android phones in the second quarter.

IDC says the iPhone remains No. 2 behind Android, even without new Apple products driving purchases. Its market share is expected to grow again when a new iPhone comes out, likely this fall.

In the April-June period, Android phones accounted for 79 per cent of worldwide shipments, up from 69 per cent a year ago. The number of Android phones shipped grew nearly 74 per cent to 187 million. IDC says shipments of iPhones also grew, by 20 per cent to 31 million. But market share fell to 13 per cent from nearly 17 per cent.

Microsoft’s Windows Phone was third in the second quarter, with a nearly 4 per cent share, followed by BlackBerry, with almost 3 per cent.
