Young man drowns in Alouette Lake in Maple Ridge

A 21-year-old Port Coquitlam man drowned while swimming in Alouette Lake on Thursday afternoon.

Ridge Meadows RCMP and the B.C. Coroner’s Service are now investigating.

Police are releasing few details at this time, but say police and ambulances were called at about 3:45 p.m. to Golden Ears Provincial Park.

The man was swimming with friends at the lake when he went underwater and never resurfaced. He was pulled out of the water about 20 minutes later and given CPR.

Efforts to revive the young man by both citizens and paramedics were not successful. An air ambulance was also called.

“The investigation into the drowning is in its early stages,” said Corporal Alanna Dunlop, “therefore it is too early to say what the cause was.  It does not appear there is any indication of foul play.”

Police are not releasing the name of the victim until they can notify the next of kin.
