SASKATOON – The Saskatchewan government is being asked to hold off on a plan to install camera surveillance systems on the tops of fire observation towers.

The province has said that cameras are safer, more effective and cost less than having towers staffed by people.
But the Saskatchewan Government Employees’ Union says removing human eyes from the observation posts risks public safety.
About 38 seasonal workers will lose their jobs as a result of the transition.
