HALIFAX – Federal Liberal leader Justin Trudeau is dominating his Conservative and NDP counterparts in support from Atlantic Canadians.

New poll results released on Wednesday suggest the Liberals, under Trudeau, have the support of 49 per cent of Atlantic Canadians, which is slightly more than the ruling Conservatives and Opposition New Democrats combined.

Support for the Liberals rose 15 percentage points since the last Corporate Research Associates (CRA) survey three months ago, while the Conservatives and the NDP — both at 24 per cent — dropped five percentage points and seven percentage points, respectively.

The Green Party, remaining in the single digits, is also down in popularity. Only four per cent of the Atlantic Canadians support the Greens, down from eight per cent earlier this year.

The recent selection of Justin Trudeau as the new Leader of the Liberal Party, in conjunction with the recent senate scandal has led to a surge of support for the Liberals across Atlantic Canada,” CRA’s chairman and CEO Don Mills said in a press release.

Still, 46 per cent of the 1,500 adult Atlantic Canadians surveyed either refused to say who they support, were undecided or said they did not plan to vote.

Trudeau also saw support for his Liberal leadership double that of former interim leader Bob Rae, since the last quarter. CRA reports 42 per cent of Atlantic Canadians back the 41-year-old Member of Parliament for Papineau.

Rae, who has since announced his retirement from politics, had the support of just 21 per cent of respondents when CRA conducted its last survey in February.

By comparison, Prime Minister Stephen Harper continues to drop in popularity. Now, just 18 per cent of respondents are happy with his leadership, down from 25 per cent in the last quarter. NDP leader Thomas Mulcair saw his support drop as well, sliding from 20 per cent to 15 per cent.

Only four per cent of those who responded to the survey say they support Green Party leader Elizabeth May.

Mills said support for Trudeau and the Liberal Party in Atlantic Canada “has coincided with increases for Liberals at the provincial level.

CRA conducted the quarterly survey between May 8 to May 30, and reports results are accurate within +/- 2.5 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.
