Canada Post holding mail for homes affected by flooding

CALGARY- Thousands of Calgarians in evacuated neighborhoods or communities without power are still not receiving mail.

Canada Post is holding all those letters, parcels and courier deliveries at postal depots for pick up. For example, depot #1 in Parkland delivers mail along Memorial Drive north of the Bow River and the downtown core. They have everything which can’t be delivered to Chinatown, parts of the Beltline and other areas in the core.

Other depots holding mail are across from Chinook Centre and in Royal Oak–but it’s not a situation Canada Post is used to.

“None of us have ever done anything like this before. It’s been a struggle daily,” says Mike Benson. “Where we can deliver, where we can access…we want to deliver every piece of mail that’s physically possible to get out of this building.  That’s our goal.”

Those who are not getting delivery should pick up their mail at the following depots:

Bowness Depot, 4040 Bowness Road NW from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for people living in the following areas:

  • Sunnyside and Westmount/Hillhurst with the first three characters of their postal code T2N;
  • China Town with the first three characters of their postal code T2P;
  • Beltline with the first three characters of their postal code, T2P and T2R;

Chinook Depot, 6939 Fisher Road from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for people living in the following areas:

  • Rideau, Riverdale, Roxbororo, Stanley Park/Elboya and Cliff Bungalow with the first three characters of their postal code T2S;
  • Windsor Park with the first three characters of their postal code T2V and T2T;
  • Erlton and Mission with the first three characters of their postal code T2S;
  • Beltline, Bonny Brook, China Town, Downtown East Village, and Inglewood with the first three characters of their postal codeT2G;
  • Elbow Park with the first three characters of their postal code T2T

For anyone not able to return home for weeks or months, Canada Post is waiving the $80 fee to redirect mail.  Any mail that is not picked up will be delivered as soon as service can be restored.

Residents of High River can also pick up their mail starting Friday, at the post office on McRae Street in Okotoks. It will also be open on Saturday and Sunday.
