Three-year-old toddler uses Twitter

FREDERICTON — Isabelle Cullen is not your average toddler.

At three years old, she already has her own Twitter account, which she uses to stay in touch with her grandparents and relatives around the world.

It all began after her dad, Peter, and her mom, Stephanie, took Isabelle to the Fredericton Tweet-up in March.

“While we were there people kept joking ‘does she have a Twitter account, does she have a Twitter account?’ and it kind of dawned on me the next day, that would actually be a good medium,” says Peter.

Peter and Stephanie are both teachers, and they’re using Twitter to teach Isabelle about computers, as well as spelling and grammar.

“Instead of just correcting her when she speaks, we kind of do it with the computer. ‘Well, read it out loud, do you think that sounds right?’ So it’s a bit of a grammar lesson then too.”

Isabelle and her parents take pictures of things she sees during her day, and then write about them later.

“The easiest thing for her is recounting, not creative writing. Just taking an event that she’s already done and explaining it, which is actually straight out of the NB curriculum,” Peter says.

He says Twitter is a great resource for parents and teachers. Since starting the account Peter says Isabelle has improved her spelling and reading comprehension to a kindergarten level.
