Oliver condo owners told to vacate their homes

OLIVER — It’s a home owners nightmare. Finding out you have just over two months to move out of your building because it’s deemed too dangerous to live in. That’s the situation dozens of condo owners in Oliver face after receiving notice to vacate just days ago. Now, there’s a real possibility these displaced residents may never be able to move back in.

It wasn’t long after an earthquake in 2011 when the problems began and cracks in the structure of Park Place started to appear.

All 60 residents, many of them seniors, will be forced to vacate the building by no later than September 1st.

According to a recent engineering report, while not in imminent danger, the building has become unsafe to live in and a notice to vacate has been issued for all 43 units.

Barbara Klassen lives in the building and spent her life savings purchasing the place. “It’s a disaster and it’s hard to think, I’m sorry but I’m… crying” she says.

Klassen now has to shutdown her pedicure business and move in with her daughter in Quebec.

Park Place was built almost 30 years ago and until the earthquake, the strata says the building was a model of perfection.

Now owners are faced with a situation they never asked for, the repairs will cost millions and it could take years before people can move back in, if ever at all.

The complex is valued at around 6 million dollars.
