Councillor Kim Krushell will not seek re-election

EDMONTON – Edmonton Ward 2 City Councillor Kim Krushell announced Tuesday she will not seek re-election in October.

While making the announcement on Tuesday at 12:15 p.m. in front of City Hall, she said she will be taking a break from civic politics.

“It is time for me to take a break. I will not be running for mayor, nor will I be running as a city councillor for Ward 2,” Krushell explained.

She explained family commitments are the reason she’s decided not to run in the October 21 municipal election, adding she’s looking forward to spending more time with her family.

“My son has turned 13, and I want to spend more time with him before he graduates high school, and I’d like to spend more time with my husband Jay.”

“Over the past eight months, our family has gone through a lot, as my mother-in-law has bravely had to face a diagnosis of Alzheimers and my father-in-law has successfully battled a rare skin cancer. It’s put life in perspective for me.”

Krushell has served as Ward 2 councillor for three consecutive terms.

She was first elected in 2004.

On Monday, Ward 3 Councillor Dave Loken announced he would seek re-election in the fall.

Ward 5 Councillor Karen Leibovici is scheduled to announce her political intentions on Thursday.

At the end of May, Ward 12 Councillor Amarjeet Sohi announced he would not run for mayor, but would be seeking re-election as councillor in Ward 12.

Councillor Kerry Diotte has already announced he will be running for mayor. Mayor Stephen Mandel will not be seeking re-election.

Former councillor Mike Nickel, who lost to Don Iveson in 2007 is hoping to get back into political life. A news conference is planned for Wednesday.

The 2013 civic election will take place October 21.
